Seasonal driveway planning

# What should you check on your driveway after heavy rain?
Once conditions are safe, look for changes in where water sits, whether pavement has moved and where loose material has washed away. Record what you can see from stable ground. A wet driveway can reveal a problem, but a puddle or crack alone does not identify its cause.

At [Surefoot Houston Driveway Repair](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/), we use those observations to help define a driveway assessment. You do not need to investigate beneath a slab or enter flowing water to prepare useful information. The aim is to describe what changed and protect access while a suitable repair is considered.

## Wait until you can observe the driveway safely
Do not walk or drive into floodwater to see how deep it is. Water can conceal a missing edge, an open depression or a damaged crossing. If the route appears undermined or visibly displaced, keep vehicles away from that part and arrange another access plan where practical. A photograph taken from a safe position is more useful than a close inspection that puts you over uncertain ground.

Begin with the view from the house or another stable, dry surface. Compare the entrance, the garage threshold and the edges. Note whether the condition was visible before the storm. If the driveway cannot be approached safely, tell us that when you [request an assessment](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/contact/); do not move barriers or attempt an improvised crossing.

## Separate temporary wetness from a changed drainage pattern
Photograph the same area after the rain stops and again as the surface dries. Record the approximate time rather than assuming every puddle has the same significance. A depression that holds water repeatedly calls for a different discussion from a thin film that disappears as surrounding surfaces dry. Our [guide to driveway pooling](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/guide/driveway-pooling-water/) explains how surface levels, discharge points and pavement movement can interact.

Look beyond the wet spot without entering unstable areas. A downspout may discharge near an edge, loose soil may have moved, or landscaping may interrupt an earlier flow path. Harris County Flood Control describes the region's flat terrain and clay soils; that context supports careful drainage assessment, but it does not prove the soil or cause at an individual property. Our [driveway drainage service](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/driveway-drainage/) handles water at the driveway; we distinguish it from whole-yard drainage the site may need.

## Record movement, not just the width of a crack
A useful photograph shows both sides of a crack and its position relative to nearby pavement. A close-up alone may hide the raised edge that affects walking or the sunken panel that changes water flow. Avoid placing your hand or tools in an opening. Describe any visible change in height and whether a vehicle has begun to scrape where it previously passed.

For concrete, compare [hairline and moving cracks](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/guide/hairline-vs-moving-driveway-cracks/) before choosing a treatment. [Crack repair](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/driveway-crack-repair/) addresses an opening; it does not automatically restore the support or elevation of a panel. A structurally suitable settled slab may be considered for [leveling](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/driveway-leveling/), while fragmented concrete can require a different scope.

If the pavement looks higher after rain, do not assume lifting is the answer. The observation could involve changes in adjoining surfaces or movement that needs further investigation. Our [sinking and heaving guide](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/guide/driveway-sinking-heaving/) separates those decisions.

## Read loose aggregate and asphalt damage differently
On an unpaved driveway, washed material can leave channels or expose a softer underlying layer. Adding aggregate without restoring an appropriate profile may leave the next storm following the same route. [Gravel driveway repair](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/gravel-driveway-repair/) should consider where material went, whether the surface needs regrading and how the entrance connects to adjoining ground.

On asphalt, record any new pothole, broken edge or connected crack pattern. Water may make existing weaknesses more apparent, but the storm does not necessarily explain the original failure. A patch over a wet, unstable base can leave the support problem unresolved. Read about [base failure](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/guide/driveway-base-failure/) and the distinction between [asphalt patching](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/asphalt-patching/) and a surface treatment before authorizing work.

Have clear photos of a changed edge or low area? [Ask us to review the driveway concern](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/contact/) and explain what the assessment needs to establish.

## Include the entrance at the street
Where the driveway crosses a ditch, sidewalk or public right-of-way, note visible changes without trying to clear a culvert or alter the approach. The responsible authority and permit requirements depend on the address and road. [Driveway apron repair](https://surefoothoustondrivewayrepair.com/driveway-apron-repair/) can involve more than replacing the material immediately under a car's tires.

Keep earlier repair paperwork with your photographs. A marked sketch showing the garage, street and damaged area helps explain the location. If an insurer or property manager has asked for information, preserve the original notice and separate the observed condition from your assumptions about its cause. A repair assessment is not a coverage determination.

## Questions about a post-rain driveway check

### Should I photograph the wet area before it disappears?
Yes, if you can do so from a safe position. Include a wide view and note when the rain ended. A later photograph of the same area helps show how the water cleared without assuming the remaining mark identifies a defect.

### Does washed-out gravel mean the whole entrance needs paving?
No. The useful first question is why material moved and whether the driveway profile and support can be restored. Paving over the same unresolved condition may transfer the problem into a more expensive surface.

### Can rain observations replace an on-site driveway assessment?
No. They help identify the concern and its timing, but they do not show concealed support, material depth or every level change. We use the observations to focus the assessment rather than promise a repair from photographs alone.
